Heating & Cooling Features in the Trailhead Homes
Shoulder season in Alabama is approaching, and that means your air conditioning and heating system might be running at max capacity during the same 24 hours! Blistering hot afternoons and very cool nights frequent the Rocket City throughout autumn. It’s important to think about what you want to keep you comfortable in your home.
Here’s a great list of the heating and cooling features that Trailhead offers:
1. Fireplaces
Does anyone else immediately get “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” in their heads when thinking about fireplaces? There’s nothing like a warm, cozy fire to snuggle up by with a cup of your favorite warm beverage. Depending on what you use in your fireplace, these can be a green option to keep your house toasty this winter!
With Trailhead’s custom plans, you have the option to select a floor plan with a fireplace. A hearth just seems to make a home more inviting and creates a space for family and friends to gather. Trailhead offers the opportunity to make your space as inviting as you’d like—whatever that looks like to you.
2. Windows
Windows can either be a gift or a curse when trying to heat and cool your house; it all depends on quality. Quality windows will keep the heat in during the winter, the heat out during the summer, and visa-versa for the winter. There are a variety of window characteristics that can help this, including size, number of panes, and frame material.
Trailhead windows are vinyl single-hung Low-E style windows. Ok, let’s talk in English, right? These are standard windows, where the bottom part slides up and down and the top is fixed. These windows are energy efficient, easy to replace if necessary, and super durable! We’re happy to report that these windows are certainly a gift and will enable your house to stay at whatever temperature you desire.
3. Insulation
Insulation is another huge factor in keeping your home cold, hot, and just generally cost-efficient. Putting insulation in your attic is supposed to be one of the most straightforward ways to make sure your HVAC isn’t having to work overtime. In Trailhead homes, there is R30 blown insulation in the attic, which is fantastic for hot climates.
To boot, Trailhead offers the option to include foil face OSB roof decking and garage insulation. Foil face insulation reflects the sun’s heat before it even enters your attic, which lets that insulation do an even better job of keeping you cool in the summer! Garage insulation is another option found in the Trailhead homes—perfect for the crafter, car enthusiast, or woodworker.
4. HVAC System
Of course, your HVAC system is the one pulling the real weight around here. HVAC systems that are energy efficient, affordable, and easy to fix are a must-have in today’s world. Trailhead currently includes a 14 seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) heat pump as part of the standard home package. This type of HVAC system checks all the boxes!
A 14 SEER heat pump is one of the most popular options available today. These systems are 20-30% more efficient than the systems seen in the early 2000s, which were rated at an 8 or 9 SEER. These new systems use just a fraction of the electricity that these older machines needed, which helps your house and your wallet.
5. Smart Thermostats
We love a smart thermostat. They’re programmable, so you can cut down on costs when you’re not at home. They’re sleek-looking and add a touch of elegance when changing your home’s temperature. And, they’re easy to change from afar, when you’re on vacation, headed home from work early, or even from the comfort of your own bed on your phone.
Trailhead offers the option to include this trendy and energy-efficient feature on any floor plan. This small but very impactful upgrade can elevate your home’s overall comfort level. These smart thermostats can even tell you when your HVAC isn’t functioning correctly!

We highly recommend visiting them for those unique pieces that you can’t find anywhere else. Plus, who doesn’t love shopping local and supporting individual artists?!
8 - Vintage 72
Vintage 72 is located on University Drive right on the edge of Madison, which is Huntsville’s fun neighboring city. This furniture consignment shop is much smaller than University Pickers, but it’s still full of some unique items. Imagine an historical home being transformed into a refurbished furniture paradise, and you’ll get an idea of what The Plucky Peacock is like! This is such a quaint experience in a more rural part of Huntsville located on Jeff Drive, right before you get to Madison. It would be smart to stop here and Vintage 72 in the same trip.
12 - Willowbrook Shoppe
This upscale collection of antique furniture, rugs, and décor is like walking into a museum. Trailhead Huntsville: Top 7 Reasons Why You Should Move to Huntsville
Trailhead Huntsville may be a little biased, but we believe that Huntsville, Alabama is one of the best cities to call home in 2022.
Don’t just take it from us! U.S. News ranked Huntsville, Alabama as the third best place to live this year in the United States with an overall score of 7.6/10 and a Quality of Life score of 8.2/10. Huntsville also ranked #1 on the Most Affordable list and on the Best Places to Live in Alabama list.
With thousands of open jobs this Spring and new businesses opening seemingly every week, it’s no surprise that more people are choosing to call Huntsville home. Not to mention, the cost of living remains low in comparison to other cities!
Nestled in the cove of a small mountain range, Huntsville offers a variety of trails for hikers and mountain bikers alike. This makes Huntsville not only a fun and affordable place to live but also the perfect home for nature lovers.
Taking all of this into account, we gathered the top 7 reasons why we believe Huntsville is the best city to live in the United States.
Jobs for All Skill Levels
Over 8,000 jobs are currently listed on Indeed alone in the Huntsville, AL area. High-profile employers like the FBI and U.S. Space Command shared that they will be slowly moving to Huntsville over the next few years bringing hundreds of new jobs with them.
A Smart Place through the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce listed the top employers in Huntsville based on the number of jobs each company offers. They named the U.S. Army/Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville Hospital, and NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center as the top 3 employers.
Not to mention, “Now Hiring” and “Help Wanted” signs can be found all across the city in restaurants, retail outlets, entertainment venues, and more. The types of jobs available currently range from entry-level all the way up to seasoned rocket scientists.
In other words, you’ve got options when it comes to finding employment in the Rocket City!
High Graduation Rate with Excellent School Systems
There are 55 public schools, 27 private schools, and 9 post-secondary schools in Huntsville. The graduation rate is high in Huntsville, where the high school diploma rate is 3% higher than the national average, and the bachelor’s degree percentage is 37% higher than the national average!
This high graduation rate correlates with the K-12 exemplary school systems, highly rated by parents across the city. Top elementary schools include Mt. Carmel, Riverton, Farley, Monte Sano, and Weatherly Heights. Also, diversity is high and more opportunity is created for students of all demographics and socioeconomic standings with the help of organizations like the Huntsville Inner City Learning Center.
Countless Entertainment Options
Entertainment abounds in Huntsville from the West in Town Madison down to Bailey Cove all the way over to Monte Sano in the East. And of course, everything in between!
Sports fans can attend a Trash Pandas baseball game, Huntsville Havoc hockey game, or a USFL football game! For those who are more hands-on, they can enjoy a round of Top Golf in MidCity, play games at Dave & Busters, or enjoy the climbing wall at REI.
Cultured folks and art connoisseurs may visit the well-curated and frequently updated Huntsville Museum of Art.
Also, music lovers should keep an eye out for live local music all over the city and big-name concerts at the Von Braun Center.
Sweet & Savory Food Options
Honestly, we could list dozens of restaurants here ranging widely in price, including Cotton Row, The Po’Boy Factory, Jack Brown’s, and Purveyor. The point is that in every district of the city, you’re sure to have manifold options for exquisite cuisine.
And who can forget desserts? Beyond the traditional ice cream parlors and cake shops (*cough Edgar’s!), Huntsville also brings a mean cookie game with crumbl cookies and nostalgic milkshake offerings like Oscar Moon’s Milkshake Shop.
Brews of the Alcoholic and Nonalcoholic Varieties
When it comes to beer, Huntsville passed the Gourmet Beer Bill in 2009 which allowed higher alcohol content. This means the breweries have honed in on their craft for over a decade now. There are now at least ten breweries in Huntsville, many of them with several national awards under their belt!
Coffee-lovers rejoice in local offerings like Offbeat Coffee Studio and Angel’s Island. Tea-lover’s will find bubble tea at Kung Fu Tea and refreshing, locally-sourced teas from Piper & Leaf.
Surrounded by Nature
Huntsville is home to Monte Sano State Park which boasts of camping sites, mountain views, and plenty of wildlife. This park offers dozens of trails for hikers, bikers, and even paved paths with accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers.
Beyond the State Park, nature lovers can enjoy a membership through the Botanical Garden which hosts many events throughout the year. Many of these events are family-friendly with STEM learning for kids. Burritt on the Mountain also offers a great getaway with an historic mansion, historic cabins, and nature trails. Not to mention the farm animals, including goats and a pig.

What’s All the Fuss about Active Adult Communities?
One of Bob Seger’s most famous lines from Against the Wind says, “I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.” That lyric applies to many aspects of growing older. But thankfully, some things get better with age, like a good bottle of wine, a healthy friendship, and these days, one’s living situation.
Housing for adults approaching their later stage of life used to be limited to meagre options. In recent decades, active adult communities erased that problem by providing vibrant neighborhoods full of the lucky ones looking to have a good time.
What Is an Active Adult Community?
Active adult neighborhoods cater to adults at the age of 55 or better, sometimes with enforced age restrictions. Housing tends to reflect a more minimal lifestyle, often existing as apartments, condos, or townhomes.
The word “active” perfectly describes the biggest aspect of an active adult community. Typically, part of the fees included in monthly payments pay for amenities like a fitness center, walking trails, tennis courts, or a pool.
The Perks of Active Adult Communities
While active adult communities aren’t for everyone, they offer some fantastic alternative benefits in comparison to other living options. Here are 5 enticing reasons why an active adult community might be the best option for you.
1. Community in Every Sense of the Word
Experience the feeling of camaraderie with peers in the same stage of life. Even though many active adult communities enforce an age restriction, many active adults feel a true sense of community being surrounded by people their own age.
2. It’s Like Being on Vacation All the Time
Remember when you dreamed of retiring and going on vacation to some peaceful locale? When you live in an AAC, you get to experience that feeling all the time…in your own home!
3. A Smaller Home Means Less Time Cleaning
You already know what’s valuable in life. As keeping up with the Jones’s becomes a lower priority, trading in a large living space for a smaller one feels freeing. Plus, it means less maintenance and cleaning!
4. Spend Less Time Driving and More Time Walking
AACs often contain everything a person needs within walking distance. This includes shopping, dining, and fun activities. Depending on the public transportation situation in your AAC, you might even be able to sell your vehicle after moving!
5. Embrace Your Inner Kid Again
Who says adults can’t have fun? Imagine waking up every day with so many options at your fingertips that it’s difficult to decide on what to do first! Experience the great outdoors on a quiet walking trail, get brunch with some friends at the café located beneath your townhome, and pick up a few groceries for a game night later that evening. All of this and more could be possible in your own neighborhood!

Say Goodbye to Move-Swings: Are You Getting Your Money's Worth?
If last year taught us anything, it’s that the place we call “home” matters. Working from home caused a huge shift in how we think about our residence.
Home looks different for all of us, but many people last year decided it looked a lot like suburbia. More than half of city dwellers seeking a home in 2020 sought to move to the suburbs.
The growing demand for suburban homes ushered in an influx of new construction housing developments. But not all new construction is created equal.
Here are 3 valuable features to look for when considering a new construction home:
Peaceful Surrounding Landscape
Most new construction developments exist on small pieces of land sandwiched between busy streets. Perhaps the actual neighborhood looks aesthetically-pleasing, but as soon as you turn out of the neighborhood it feels like an ugly, busy city.
Look for a new neighborhood built near farmland or nature preserves. When you struggle to find that, at least opt for the neighborhood that feels tucked away.
Drive around the development you’re considering and roll your window down. Do you hear busy traffic, screaming kids on a playground, industrial equipment sounds, or sports field announcers? If so, consider a different development.
HOA Fees that Actually Improve Your Life
Almost all new construction neighborhoods charge HOA fees. Before purchasing your new home, consider the price and how many amenities and benefits it covers.
With a national average of $300 per month, you want to try to find new homes with a lower cost per month and the least amount of restrictions. Some important fine print rules to read are:
- Restrictions in regard to pets (whether they’re allowed, what sizes, breeds)
- Whether you can rent out your property
- If you can personalize your yard and house over time
Beyond that, consider the perks. If you pay higher than the national average, look for a community center, local shopping, restaurants and cafés, and nature trails.
Trailhead offers maintenance of trails, the greenway, and overall property. It also offers entertainment practically at your doorstep! All of this for only $900/year!
Ability to Check Every Box on Your Wishlist
Finally, consider your wish list. Many new construction homes come at a higher price, so make sure you get everything you want.
Don’t just settle for new finishes. Expect a high-grade kitchen with state-of-the art appliances, a walk-in closet, and a lot of windows. Look for energy-efficient features.
If you can’t check everything off your list, don’t pay a premium price. Make sure a new construction home includes EVERYTHING you want to make it your forever home.
